CARBURETTOR
SERVICING
At Martins Superbike Service, carburettor servicing is carried out as a proper mechanical overhaul, not simply a quick clean. Each set of carburettors is inspected, dismantled, cleaned, checked and set up methodically, with particular attention given to the problems commonly found on Japanese motorcycles that have been standing, poorly maintained or previously worked on.
The process begins with an external inspection to identify obvious damage, fuel staining, seized components, incorrect fittings or signs that the carburettors have been disturbed before. The carburettors are then carefully stripped, with removable jets, float assemblies, needles and serviceable components taken out for individual inspection.
Internal passages and carburettor bodies are cleaned using professional ultrasonic cleaning equipment to remove old fuel deposits, varnish and contamination from areas that conventional aerosol cleaners cannot properly reach. Jets are cleaned separately and inspected to ensure their internal metering holes are clear and undamaged. Components are never drilled or enlarged simply to clear a blockage.
Float needles and seats, O-rings, gaskets, diaphragms, mixture screws and other wear items are inspected for deterioration or damage. Where replacement parts are required, I use new OEM or high-quality components rather than second-hand parts. Float heights, mixture screw settings and other adjustments are checked against the correct specification wherever reliable manufacturer data is available.
During reassembly, each carburettor is checked for correct mechanical operation, including throttle movement, choke or enrichment operation, slides, linkages and return springs. The carburettors are then bench-checked and, where appropriate, given an initial synchronisation so that all cylinders are starting from an even baseline before installation on the motorcycle.
The aim is not simply to make the carburettors look cleaner. The objective is to return the fuel system to a known mechanical condition so that starting, idle quality, throttle response and fuelling can be properly assessed once the carburettors are back on the bike.
Martins Superbike Service specialises in Japanese motorcycles, including classic and modern superbikes, sports bikes and restoration projects. Every carburettor service is approached methodically, with emphasis on correct specification, careful workmanship and preserving original components wherever practical.
1 — Carb Clean & Service — £175 + parts
Includes external inspection and cleaning, float bowls/tops removed, service components stripped, ultrasonic cleaning, all accessible fuel/air passages checked, jets inspected and cleaned, float heights checked/set, reassembly, bench synchronisation and leak testing.
Rack remains assembled; this is not a full rack split.
2 — Full Carb Rebuild — £285 + parts
Everything in Package 1, plus a substantially deeper strip. Rack separated where required, fuel rail/seals inspected, choke/enrichment system checked, linkages inspected, mixture screws fully removed and inspected, wear points checked, replacement seals/components fitted as required, factory baseline settings restored, leak tested and precision bench synchronised.
This is the package I'd expect most 1990s–2000s Japanese superbike carburettors to fall into when they arrive with unknown history.
3 — Complete Carb Restoration — £425 + parts
Full carburettor bank disassembly including separation of individual carb bodies, extensive removal of corrosion/oxidation and deposits, detailed cleaning of linkages/hardware/pipes, assessment of rubber components, comprehensive seal renewal, jet/needle specifications recorded, factory settings reinstated, complete rebuild and synchronisation, extended leak testing plus photographic/condition reporting.
This is the premium service for restoration-quality work, long-stored bikes or carburettors where condition and originality matter.
